Spatial activity-based modeling for pedestrian crowd simulation

چکیده
This paper proposes a spatial activity-based modeling approach and applies it to pedestrian crowd behavior simulations. Compared to conventional pedestrian crowd models where pedestrians make movement decisions in a time-based manner, the spatial activity-based pedestrian crowd model allows a pedestrian to make decisions only when needed, that is, when there is significant change in the pedestrian’s spatial position as defined by a threshold called “space resolution”. To demonstrate the spatial activity-based modeling, we develop an activitybased model for pedestrian crowd simulation in a two-dimensional environment and compare it with a conventional time-based simulation model. Experiment results show that the spatial activity-based model can lead to more efficient simulations when simulating heterogeneous pedestrian crowds.

A Framework for Group Modeling in Agent-Based Pedestrian Crowd Simulations
Pedestrian crowd simulation explores crowd behaviors in virtual environments. It is extensively studied in many areas, such as safety and civil engineering, transportation, social science, entertainment industry and so on. As a common phenomenon in pedestrian crowds, grouping can play important roles in crowd behaviors. To achieve more realistic simulations, it is important to support group mod...
متن کاملA Simple and Realistic Pedestrian Model for Crowd Simulation and Application
The simulation of pedestrian crowd that reflects reality is a major challenge for researches. Several crowd simulation models have been proposed such as cellular automata model, agent-based model, fluid dynamic model, etc. It is important to note that agent-based model is able, over others approaches, to provide a natural description of the system and then to capture complex human behaviors. In...
متن کاملModeling group structures in pedestrian crowd simulation
Grouping is a common phenomenon in pedestrian crowds and plays important roles in affecting crowd behavior. Group modeling is still an open challenging problem and has not been incorporated by existing crowd simulation models. Motivated by the need of group modeling for crowd behavior simulation, this paper presents a unified and well-defined framework for modeling the structure aspect of diffe...
متن کاملExploiting Spatial-temporal Heterogeneity for Agent-based Simulation of Pedestrian Crowd Behavior
Agent-based simulations of pedestrian crowd behavior include a large number of agents, each of which typically decides its movement behavior in a time-based manner. Such a time-based approach makes it difficult to exploit the crowd system’s spatial and temporal heterogeneity resulting from agents’ non-uniform movements. This paper presents a discrete event approach for simulating pedestrian cro...
متن کاملEmergent Crowd Behavior from the Microsimulation of Individual Pedestrians
Modeling pedestrian traffic at the micro-level is a relatively young research area. The key to success is driven on the ability to appropriately model crowd behavior that arises in pedestrian traffic. One method of validation for such simulation models examines their ability to reproduce commonly observed crowd behavior. This paper demonstrates how commonly observed crowd behavior emerges from ...
